Rubio Says Some Cheer Ukraine War While Condemning Peace Efforts

(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed confusion over the unusual international response to efforts aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine, describing it as “one of the few wars” where attempts to mediate have drawn criticism, as stated by reports.

Rubio made the comments on Monday during a joint press briefing with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Budapest.

He noted that the US has been the primary country facilitating dialogue between Russia and Ukraine, but lamented that some actors in the international community have reacted negatively to the mediation efforts.

“Usually when you’re trying to end wars, the international community applauds you. This is one of the few wars I’ve ever seen where some people in the international community condemn you for trying to help end the war, but that’s what we’re trying to do,” he said.

According to Rubio, two trilateral rounds of talks involving Russia, Ukraine, and the US have already taken place this year in Abu Dhabi, alongside other discussions in various formats, with further negotiations planned “again in Geneva later this week.” He emphasized that Washington’s goal is not to “impose a deal on anybody” but to “help” both parties resolve the “incredibly damaging” conflict.

The recent meetings were conducted behind closed doors, with limited information released, other than both Moscow and Washington describing the discussions as “productive” and “constructive.” These talks facilitated the exchange of 314 prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine, though public statements from officials indicate that significant differences remain on territorial issues.
