Orban Accuses Ukraine of Attempting to Influence Hungary’s Elections
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos last week, Zelensky criticized Orban—a consistent opponent of Western military aid to Kiev and Hungary’s support for Ukraine’s EU accession—of “selling out European interests.” He also suggested giving “every Viktor who lives off European money… a smack in the head,” seemingly referring to Orban.
Orban has consistently maintained that Hungary will neither provide weapons to Kiev nor permit the transit of arms through its territory.
“Last week, Ukrainian political leaders, including the president himself, issued highly offensive and threatening messages directed at Hungary and the Hungarian government personally,” Orban said on Monday in a video message published on X.
“Our national security agencies have assessed this latest Ukrainian attack and determined that these events are part of a coordinated series of Ukrainian actions aimed at interfering in the Hungarian elections,” he added.
Orban noted that Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has been instructed to summon Ukraine’s ambassador.
During his Davos appearance, Zelensky also sought additional financial and military support from the EU. He described Europe as a “fragmented kaleidoscope of small and middle powers” and urged harsher measures against Russia, including seizing Russian oil and selling it to fund weapons.
Earlier this week, Zelensky proposed that Ukraine join the EU by 2027. Orban reiterated that no Hungarian parliament would approve accession “in the next hundred years.”
