Slovakia Threatens Legal Action Against EU
The announcement follows a vote by EU member states the previous day, which granted final approval to the REPowerEU regulation. This initiative aims to gradually eliminate natural gas imports from Russia by November of next year.
“We will file a lawsuit against this regulation at the Court of Justice of the EU,” Fico declared during a press briefing, referring to the impending ban as the ultimate stage of the bloc’s “energy suicide.”
Fico criticized the decision as being driven purely by animosity, stating, “It is a solution that was adopted solely out of hatred towards the Russian Federation. I reject hatred as a trait that should determine international relations.”
The EU’s vote passed through a qualified majority, a tactic used to bypass the requirement for unanimous consent, which some argue contravenes the bloc’s foundational treaties.
Slovakia and Hungary plan to submit individual lawsuits, although Fico noted that both countries will align their strategies. According to officials in Budapest, the vote was deliberately conducted in a way that ignored Hungary’s and Slovakia’s objections on an issue affecting their national interests.
