FM of Hungary says US-Russia summit in Budapest remains on track

(MENAFN) Hungary’s foreign minister confirmed Wednesday that plans for a US-Russia peace summit in Budapest remain active, despite doubts from international observers.

"Bad news for the pro-war lobby and good news for those who want peace," Peter Szijjarto wrote on social media following a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He added, "After my meeting with Rubio, it’s clear that the US has not given up on holding the Budapest Peace Summit. Preparations are ongoing, and the only question is timing, not intention.”

Earlier, a White House official noted that discussions for a second summit between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin had been paused after a productive call between Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Trump initially announced plans on Oct. 16 to meet Putin in Hungary within two weeks.

However, Trump later told reporters at the White House that he had canceled the summit, explaining, "We canceled the meeting with President Putin, it didn't feel right to me. It didn’t feel like we were going to get to the place we have to get, so I canceled it. But we’ll do it in the future."
He also expressed frustration with the slow progress in negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, saying, "In terms of honesty, the only thing I can say is, every time I speak with Vladimir, I have good conversations, and then they don't go anywhere. They just don't go anywhere."

According to reports, while the summit’s timing is uncertain, Hungary continues to prepare for the possibility of hosting the talks, signaling its commitment to facilitating dialogue between the US and Russia.
